These photos were taken on April 24, 2008, just about two weeks from the 21st annual "Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival" held off the shores of Alhambra Hall.
Two of the boats that unload at the Wando Shrimp Company during shrimping season which generally runs from May or June to December.
Donny Brown ("Miss Karen")
Captain Brown is a Mount Pleasant native who has been a shrimper for 27
years. He has two sons who are also in the business, Wesley and
Michael, and one daughter, Meagan. The boat, which unloads its catch at
the Wando Shrimp Company at Haddrell Street, is named after his wife.
During the local off-season, Captain Brown leaves to shrimp in the
Outer Banks and Cape Canaveral during their shrimping seasons.
Tommy Edwards ("Miss Judy Too")
Captain Edwards has been shrimping for 34 years and named the 70-ft.
Miss Judy Too, his third boat, after his wife. He is a first-generation
shrimper from Mount Pleasant who was brought into the business by his
friends. He says that the toughest issues he faces are keeping a crew,
maintaining his boat and the current low prices of shrimp. Captain
Edwards unloads at Wando Seafood and off his boat behind The Wreck on
Haddrell Street.
